Oracle on vSphere: Re-Platforming Tier 1 Oracle Databases from UNIX to vSphere at Indiana University
Re-platforming large Oracle databases from UNIX to vSphere can yield significant cost savings and operational benefits. However, customers often hesitate due to concerns for performance, scalability, and Oracle Support.
In this session, we will present Indiana University’s recent success with the re-platforming of many large, mission critical Oracle databases from legacy UNIX servers to vSphere. We’ll discuss how Indiana University is effectively handling the Oracle support and licensing situation. We’ll present in detail the initial Proof Of Concept conducted by House of Brick and Indiana University for one of the largest Tier-1 Oracle workloads. The benchmark showed vSphere/Linux performance comparable to legacy UNIX, with overhead significantly lower than legacy.
The proof-of-concept opened the door for Indiana University to leverage vSphere’s operational benefits such as fast provisioning, and simplified HA/DR, into all Tier-1 Oracle workloads. We will present the architecture, discoveries, benchmark methodology & metrics, high-level best practices, and major benefits of the Oracle/vSphere environment.
