Theory of Relativity – Phillip Manning

Theory of Relativity – Phillip Manning
Ch–ea H-se | ISBN: 1604132949 | 2011 | PDF | 128 pages | 6,5 MB

The theory of relativity began as an idea of Galileo, a 17th-century astronomer, who wrote,
-Motion exists relatively to things that lack it.- This simple concept, when further explored by Albert Einstein, had astounding consequences. Einstein’s first step toward a comprehensive theory of relativity established that not only was motion relative, but time and space were as well. He would follow up this discovery with the world’s most famous equation, E = mc2. Ten years later, Einstein would again turn the scientific world upside down when he proclaimed that gravity is not a force, but a curvature of space-time. With this declaration, he had rewritten the most fundamental law of science.

The Sustainable World – C.A.B

The Sustainable World – C.A.B
Publisher: [WI]T Pre./ss 2010 | 816 Pages | ISBN: 1845645049 | PDF | 17.81 MB

This book contains a collection of papers presented at a series of meetings organized by the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT) dealing with sustainability,
the environment and ecological issues. The complexity of the modern world presents new challenges to scientists and engineers that requires finding interdisciplinary solutions.
Any problem solving carried out in the isolation of a particular field of expertise may give rise to a series of damaging effects which can create new and unintentional environmental and ecological problems. Specialization, while required in our culture, needs to be kept under control by the understanding of the whole, which leads to the need of relying on interdisciplinary teams.

Thermal Imaging Cameras: Characteristics and Performance

Thermal Imaging Cameras: Characteristics and Performance By Thomas Williams
Taylor & Francis | 2009-04-01 | ISBN: 1420071858 | 238 pages | PDF | 4,3 MB

The ability to see through smoke and mist and the ability to use the variances in temperature to differentiate between targets and their backgrounds are invaluable in military applications and have become major motivators for the further development of thermal imagers. As the potential of thermal imaging is more clearly understood and the cost decreases, the number of industrial and civil applications being exploited is growing quickly. In order to evaluate the suitability of particular thermal imaging cameras for particular applications, it is important to have the means to specify and measure meaningful performance characteristics.

Thermal Imaging Cameras: Characteristics and Performance expands our current understanding of thermal imaging and, most importantly, provides a sound quantitative basis for evaluating the suitability of various thermal imagers for particular applications. Utilizing a practical approach that keeps theory and mathematics to a minimum, the text reviews the important performance parameters for industrial, laboratory, and surveillance applications as well as how these parameters can be measured. The author, T. L. Williams, a distinguished expert on designing and testing thermal imaging systems and recipient of the Callendar Medal from the Institute of Measurement and Control, focuses on the standard form of imaging camera but also includes descriptions of the different specialized forms of thermal imagers useful to anyone working with these systems.

Providing detailed descriptions of the equipment and techniques that can be used for testing complete thermal imagers as well as in the testing of the main subunits of a thermal imager, this comprehensive reference will prove invaluable not only to those who use, test, and design thermal imagers, but also to anyone designing equipment or making measurements in the thermal band of wavelengths.

Integral and Diagnostic Intrusive Prediction of Speech Quality

Integral and Diagnostic Intrusive Prediction of Speech Quality By Nicolas Côté
Springer | 2011-05-05 | ISBN: 3642184626 | 265 pages | PDF | 1,5 MB

This work deals with the instrumental measurement methods for the perceived quality of transmitted speech. These measures simulate the speech perception process employed by human subjects during auditory experiments. The measure standardized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), called “Wideband-Perceptual Speech Quality Evaluation (WB-PESQ)”, is not able to quantify all these perceived characteristics on a unidimensional quality scale, the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) scale. Recent experimental studies showed that subjects make use of several perceptual dimensions to judge about the quality of speech signals. In order to represent the signal at a higher stage of perception, a new model, called “Diagnostic Instrumental Assessment of Listening quality (DIAL)”, has been developed. It includes a perceptual and a cognitive model which simulate the whole quality judgment process. Except for strong discontinuities, DIAL predicts very well speech quality of different speech processing and transmission systems, and it outperforms the WB-PESQ.

Introduction to Wireless and Mobile Systems, 3 edition By Dharma P. Agrawal, Qing-An Zeng
C.L-Eng..eering | 2010 | ISBN: 1439062056 | 608 pages | PDF | 18,7 MB

This text explains the general principles of how wireless systems work, how mobility is supported, what the underlying infrastructure is and what interactions are needed among different functional components. Designed as a textbook appropriate for undergraduate or graduate courses in Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE), and Electrical Engineering (EE), Introduction to Wireless and Mobile Systems third edition focuses on qualitative descriptions and the realistic explanations of relationships between wireless systems and performance parameters. Rather than offering a thorough history behind the development of wireless technologies or an exhaustive list of work being carried out, the authors help CS, CE, and EE students learn this exciting technology through relevant examples such as understanding how a cell phone starts working as soon as they get out of an airplane.

Nanovision: Engineering the Future

Nanovision: Engineering the Future By Colin Milburn
Publisher: Duke University Press Books | ISBN 10: 0822342650 | 2008 | PDF | 296 pages | 7.7 MB
The dawning era of nanotechnology promises to transform life as we know it. Visionary scientists are engineering materials and devices at the molecular scale that will forever alter the way we think about our technologies, our societies, our bodies, and even reality itself. Colin Milburn argues that the rise of nanotechnology involves a way of seeing that he calls “nanovision.” Trekking across the technoscapes and the dreamscapes of nanotechnology, he elaborates a theory of nanovision, demonstrating that nanotechnology has depended throughout its history on a symbiotic relationship with science fiction. Nanotechnology’s scientific theories, laboratory instruments, and research programs are inextricable from speculative visions, hyperbolic rhetoric, and fictional narratives.

Milburn illuminates the practices of nanotechnology by examining an enormous range of cultural artifacts, including scientific research articles, engineering textbooks, laboratory images, popular science writings, novels, comic books, and blockbuster films. In so doing, he reveals connections between the technologies of visualization that have helped inaugurate nano research, such as the scanning tunneling microscope, and the prescient writings of Robert A. Heinlein, James Blish, and Theodore Sturgeon. He delves into fictive and scientific representations of “gray goo,” the nightmare scenario in which autonomous nanobots rise up in rebellion and wreak havoc on the world. He shows that nanoscience and “splatterpunk” novels share a violent aesthetic of disintegration: the biological body is breached and torn asunder only to be refabricated as an assemblage of self-organizing machines. Whether in high-tech laboratories or science fiction stories, nanovision deconstructs the human subject and galvanizes the invention of a posthuman future.
