VDI Performance Benchmarking and Best Practices
Optimizing VDI performance is a challenge. Choosing the right CPU, providing enough memory per host, selecting a guest operating system, determining the best size for the virtual machines, and allocating enough storage. Making these decisions is difficult enough, but on top of all that, you need a way to validate that your setup will work as planned.
What should an administrator do? After all, VDI stands for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, not Very Difficult to Implement. In this talk, we present best practices for your VDI deployment. We realize that each environment has different usage patterns and different interactivity requirements, and we focus on general methods to help anyone get the best out of their environment. We first discuss choice of hardware, consolidation ratios, and tuning parameters for storage networking. We also present View Planner, a benchmark for measuring the performance of VDI deployments. View Planner is a benchmarking and sizing tool that automates the most common desktop office applications to produce results that directly apply to VDI environments. It extracts common usage patterns and is fully configurable to meet different evaluation needs. The results in this presentation and guidance will allow VI administrators to confidently deploy optimal VDI implementations.
