ESX iSCSI News, Configuration, and Best Practices

ESX iSCSI News, Configuration, and Best Practices
Changes to iSCSI for ESX4.0 and ESX 4.1 are described. ESX 4.0 changes include iSCSI Multipath capabilities, a VMware-developed iSCSI initiator driver, and more configuration options. ESX 4.1 features include Broadcom iSCSI HBA support, Storage-vendor supplied session managment agents and ESXi iSCSI boot capability with iBFT compatible NICS.
iSCSI SAN configuration concepts and pitfalls are explained, to give the iSCSI customer a solid basis for deploying iSCSI. iSCSI Multipathing design is discussed, along with a configuration walkthrough. Tuning options for both the multipath configuration and iSCSI initiator are covered, so a SAN administrator can get the best performance from iSCSI on ESX. Detailed explanation of storage-vendor session agents are discussed, including how they benefit iSCSI performance with clustered storage systems. Broadcom iSCSI NIC/HBA support is described, along with a configuration example. A “how to” on ESXi iSCSI Boot is included.
